  • Landscape Use: Makes an attractive small hedge without a lot of maintenance. Valuable for late season bee food source. Persistent seed heads provide winter interest. Hot, dry, full sun. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Special Conditions: A prairie plant that needs to be planted in suitable sites. Native seed sourced potentillas survived the devastating fall of 2009.
  • Landscape Use: Use as a distinctive low hedge. Very well-behaved, neat tidy plant. This is an alpine plant and would prefer full sun and dry. Special Conditions: Bow Point Nursery introduction. Needs to be planted in open dry areas and does not tolerate wet ground.
  • Landscape Use: Nice little border plant for a bed. Spreads to fill in areas. Full sun prairie plant. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Special Conditions: Commonly used for reclamation for bank stabilization. Suckers freely, so give it lots of room. May invade other areas and difficult to control.
  • Landscape Use: Alberta’s floral emblem. Fills in the space. Good understory. Hips stay on all winter, offering food for winter birds. Full sun to part shade. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Special Conditions: Commonly used for reclamation for bank stabilization. Can be suckery and aggressive. Plant with caution in an appropriate site where there is sufficient space. Once you have roses, you will always have roses. Prickly rose (Rosa acicularis) and wild rose (Rosa woodsii) overlap habitats in Calgary and do hybridize.
  • Landscape Use: This plant is valuable for its winter wood, adding colour to dreary winter landscapes. The early blooming pussy willows (male catkins) give hope for spring. Kids and adults can’t resist touching the soft, fuzzy catkins. Works well as a unique screen. Leafy in the summer and brightly coloured in the winter. Interplant with tall narrow screening trees to make for a more vibrant visual boundary because it has a relatively small footprint for tight areas. Likes full sun. Is versatile and can be used in wetter areas, but this isn’t a requirement. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Native pollinators (bees) feed on the early flowers. Special Conditions: Don’t plant too close to the neighbour’s yard because they’ll steal your pussy willows, and your friends and family will want bouquets in the spring.
  • Landscape Use: Very flexible plant that needs to be used in all landscapes. A highlight plant for winter landscapes, but beautiful year-round. A true four-season plant. Fruit is coveted by the birds; if you have this plant, you’ll have birds in your yard. Grows well in a range of conditions, from sun to partial shade, but does look the densest in full sun. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Special Conditions: Tends to root in on the bottom branches and spread; if you don’t want it to spread, just keep those bottom branches pruned up.
  • Landscape Use: Small footprint and upright form create excellent screening, shade and winter effect. Prune the base branches if a more upright appearance is desired. Great winter accent plant. Can take extra water if available, but not a requirement. Grows well in shade or full sun. Special Conditions: This plant will not compete well with grass, so make sure your site is clean before planting. Mulch the alders.
  • Landscape Use: Use as a small space screen; replaces columnar aspen. Nice light, cool shade effect without being too heavy and dark. Non-persistent catkins are desired by our small winter birds. Place in a prominent place for winter viewing. Full sun to part shade. Can handle a wet site, but not a requirement. Special Conditions: Health and vigour of this plant not affected by birch leaf miners and it is best to ignore them if they do appear. Selected seed source for narrow upright growth.
