• Landscape Use:
    • Provides a graceful, upright planting in areas where more height than width is needed. Will enhance and maintain desired views.

    Special Conditions:
    • Doesn’t tolerate grass growing around it. Keep in a mulched bed for the optimum growth and vigor.
  • Landscape Use: Striking accent plant because of the way its silver features pop out of a landscape. Distinctive fragrance. Plant along walkways or patios so that the scent follows you as you brush by. Needs hot, dry,full sun; Drumheller-like environment. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Special Conditions: Programmed to live and thrive in those hot dry problematic areas.
  • Landscape Use: Very flexible plant that needs to be used in all landscapes. A highlight plant for winter landscapes, but beautiful year-round. A true four-season plant. Fruit is coveted by the birds; if you have this plant, you’ll have birds in your yard. Grows well in a range of conditions, from sun to partial shade, but does look the densest in full sun. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Special Conditions: Tends to root in on the bottom branches and spread; if you don’t want it to spread, just keep those bottom branches pruned up.
  • Landscape Use: Makes for a very tidy well-behaved low shrub. One of the first ripe fruits for this region; fruit is tart and high in iron and vitamin C. Birds take the fruit early. Nitrogen fixer. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant. Flexible requirements, full sun to full shade. Special Conditions: Does not like its roots disturbed after planting. Uncommon and should be used more often. Landscapes in bear country should not include this plant.
  • Landscape Use: Use in areas where you have lots of room, this tree can dominate a small site. Best grown in beds with some understory plants. Mix in with other plants to make a more complex and interesting planting. In nature, they germinate and grow in the shade to become the climax community; imitate those conditions when planting. Special Conditions: All spruce will perform best if grass is not allowed to grow next to base. Keep spruce dry, they do not like wet feet. Always look up to make sure you are not planting under a power or phone line.
  • Landscape Use: We use it for shade foliage as an understory. Unique and underused plant. Unknown in the mainstream nursery industry. Special Conditions: A new introduction with limited numbers.
  • Landscape Use: This plant is valuable for its winter wood, adding colour to dreary winter landscapes. The early blooming pussy willows (male catkins) give hope for spring. Kids and adults can’t resist touching the soft, fuzzy catkins. Works well as a unique screen. Leafy in the summer and brightly coloured in the winter. Interplant with tall narrow screening trees to make for a more vibrant visual boundary because it has a relatively small footprint for tight areas. Likes full sun. Is versatile and can be used in wetter areas, but this isn’t a requirement. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Native pollinators (bees) feed on the early flowers. Special Conditions: Don’t plant too close to the neighbour’s yard because they’ll steal your pussy willows, and your friends and family will want bouquets in the spring.
  • Landscape Use: Nice little border plant for a bed. Spreads to fill in areas. Full sun prairie plant. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. Special Conditions: Commonly used for reclamation for bank stabilization. Suckers freely, so give it lots of room. May invade other areas and difficult to control.
  • Landscape Use: Will enhance your winter landscape with vibrant colours on twigs, buds and catkins. Soft, fine textured shrubs act as a great filler plant in the summer. Fits well into relatively narrow problem areas. Full sun. Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens. N ative pollinators (bees) feed on the early flowers. Special Conditions: Can handle wet, but this isn’t a requirement. You can make lovely pussy willow bouquets as a bonus.
