Gooseberry (Ribes oxyacanthoides)

Landscape Use:
Versatile; use everywhere.
Grows under spruce.
Has a graceful tumbling shape in contrast with its sharp thorns.
Berries are tasty.
Sun or shade.
Many public places have eliminated the understory plantings from a safety standpoint, but gooseberry can be used as a safe understory for mass plantings; will spread to fill in an area, yet remain low.

Special Conditions:
Likes to be in a mulched bed.
Doesn’t compete well with grasses.

Product Description

Small shrub roughly 1m high and wide.
Thorny, pendulous branches.
Fascinating growth habit.
First woody plant to leaf out in spring; three lobed green leaves turn shiny purple in fall.
Early blooming with small trumpet-like white flowers on the underside of the branches.
Pretty little purple berries are edible but not much fun to pick.
