Dwarf Birch (Betula glandulosa)

Landscape Use:
Small, well-behaved and maintains its shape without pruning.
Outstanding four-season hedge with a lot of character.
The smoky grey twigs and the dark bronzy red interior add to its winter interest.
Very tolerant of harsh urban environments.
Small winter birds feed on the nutlets.
Very flexible planting requirements, from full sun to partial shade; grows well in dry as well as moist areas.
Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens.

Special Conditions:
Does not tolerate grass growing around the base.
Prefers a mulched bed.


Product Description

Just under 2m high and relatively narrow at under 1m wide.
Dark grey branches at the tips, darker red interior.
Branches are covered with lenticels, creating a rough texture.
Attractive small round dark green leaves, outstanding orange to reddish fall colours.
Relatively insignificant small green flower gives rise to the catkins.
Male and female catkins on the same plant; female catkins disintegrate as the seeds shed (non-persistent).
